Contao Two Month Review March and April 2021

by Blair Winans – Community

In the last two months, many TV shows were produced and broadcast. We also popped some corks.

On March 12, 2006 Contao 1.0 saw the light of day and 355 releases later, it is time to celebrate its 15th birthday whole-heartedly.

It all started with the announcement and an invitation to enjoy this special day together online. The festivities kicked off with a public panel discussion. Leo and other greats from the Contao universe reviewed the last 15 years and provided an outlook on the future.

At Airmeet you could join the virtual tables before the panel discussion and listen to the different program points. We also received congratulations from the worldwide web.

The Fanshop of Contao celebrates with us, launched new designs and is looking forward to your creative ideas.

Thomas Weitzel pays homage to his love at first click in his Congratulations and collects everything worth knowing about Contao. And last but not least, Joe Ray looks back at Contao's 15th anniversary activities.

To make sure that Contao will not lack anything in the next 15 years, the possibilities to promote Contao have been extended. On the one hand with GitHub Sponsors, where you can choose between a monthly amount and a one-time donation. We were also asked to offer an even easier way to donate without needing registration which you can find here.

The in-house Contao TV channel is also busy producing new shows in its various formats. For example, in Meet the Community we learned about Christian Barkowsky, Moritz Vondano, Andreas Schempp and Ingolf Steinhardt. Further, in the Episode 9 of the Contao Show, we learned how to optimize the load time of Contao and were able to attend a great Isotope eCommerce special in the Episode 10. Stage Time's Episode 5 highlighted the topic "Contao Consent, what are these consents?".

PS: On Thursday, May 6, 2021, starting at 4:30 p.m., the second Karlsruher Tech-eXchange by IONOS will take place, and this time Contao will be there!

Blog posts, YouTube channels and miscellaneous

  • The Composer Resolver Cloud is now running PHP 8.0 on Hostingwerk's server. The switch was made by Leo and Yanick on March 23, 2021 as previously announced. Thank you and have fun with the even faster service.
  • Mathias has published a small library for the IDE PhpStorm to help you build the DCA.
  • Contao, PHP 8.0 and ALL-INKL.COM - what to consider? Mathias documents for you all the problems and solutions that came up during testing and conversion to PHP 8 at ALL-INKL.COM in a blog post. The post will be updated regularly and may help you in one or the other place.
  • Juliane wrote a small report about the really successful Contao Agency Day in March in the blog post. There you can also download pdir's post on "Sustainable Web - Energy-efficient web design is more than just eco-friendly" and catch practical tips on how to implement sustainable web projects.
  • The MATE theme now also provides styles for Contao Consent by Nicky Hoff. Simply include hofff_content.scss and you're done.

Extensions

  • RockSolid Custom Elements can now dynamically show and hide fields.
  • We already released the new Isotope eCommerce version 2.7 some time ago and now we're handing you another overview of what's new.
  • pdir has taken over the further development (fork) of the popular extension Contao Survey from Helmut Schottmüller. Thanks go to Andreas for the first tickets.
  • A lot has happened at MetaModels in the last two months - much of it in the background like a complete rework of the classes for multilingualism and a new interface (ITranslatedMetaModel). All migrations have been reworked and also many visible things like "picture factory" support for Lazyload, several new configuration options for the FE filter widgets, conversions to "Vanilla Script" and much more. For a better overview, there is a dedicated page in the manual with the changes and features of MM 2.2.
  • This month, pdir released the free Contao Business Reviews Bundle, which allows you to easily and quickly display reviews and customer opinions on a Contao website. A few tips on how to use customer testimonials can be found in Juliane's blog post.
  • The extension mp_forms has been released in version 4.2.0 - among other things the names for the templates have been adapted to the Contao standard. Own templates have to be renamed after the update.

Contao documentation

The Contao documentation continues to grow thanks to the help from the community:

The following contributions are new:

If you are still missing something, we would be happy about your contribution to the documentation - of course we would also appreciate minor spelling corrections and rewording.

Paid extensions or products

Together with my four other Contao enthusiasts, Andreas, Yanick, Alex and Christian from trakked.io - the Contao monitoring tool, we released a new version of trakked. With it, you can monitor your Contao installations and easily keep track of everything. With our update feature, you also save a lot of time and easily fulfill your maintenance contracts. Calculate now how much you can earn with maintenance contracts and how much time you can save with trakked.

Have you written a paid extension for Contao or a product that is related to Contao and want to include it here? Your contribution is welcome if you meet the following requirements:

Newly released Contao versions

Download deadline for the next review is June 27, 2021.

I am looking forward to the future of and with Contao and won't miss anything to come thanks to Contao TV.
